5-HTP is a substance said to provide more energy in the days following a party. Using 5-HTP after XTC (or other drugs) supposedly replenishes your serotonin stores and gives you an energy boost. But is this actually the case, and is there scientific evidence for it? We will explain this to you in this article.
What is 5-HTP?
5-hydroxytryptophan is a precursor to serotonin. Tryptophan is one of the basic amino acids from which the body can create many substances, such as vitamin B3 and melatonin. If you attach a hydroxyl group to the 5th carbon molecule of tryptophan, you get 5-HTP, and then only one more conversion step is needed, along with vitamin B6, to produce serotonin.
5-HTP and XTC
When using XTC/MDMA, a lot of serotonin is used in the brain. It is therefore reasonable to assume that by replenishing the necessary building blocks, you rebuild your serotonin stores. Research on rats seems to indicate this is indeed the case. However, in humans, this has not yet been investigated in the context of MDMA use. Therefore, no definitive statement can be made about the effectiveness of 5-HTP after drug use. An additional issue is that some people actually become more irritated, tired, or nauseous from using 5-HTP. This is one of the reasons why we have not included 5-HTP in our Tripsitter formula. Does this immediately mean that 5-HTP is ill-advised after XTC? Not necessarily. Many people report that they react well to it, and fortunately, 5-HTP is not harmful. Any excess is processed efficiently by the body, so it is definitely worth a try, even as a supplement to Tripsitter.
Can a combination of XTC & 5-HTP cause too much serotonin?
Yes, the combination of XTC and 5-HTP can lead to an excess of serotonin in the brain. One of the most serious risks of using 5-HTP in combination with XTC/MDMA or other substances that affect serotonin is the so-called serotonin syndrome. This can cause individuals to become overheated, dysregulated, and confused. In exceptional cases, it can even be fatal. Fortunately, this risk is incredibly small and has almost never occurred. The risk of serotonin syndrome is particularly increased when combining 5-HTP with antidepressants. Therefore, the use of 5-HTP is always discouraged if you are taking antidepressants.
Can I use XTC if I also take 5-HTP?
If you are not taking antidepressants or other medication, you can take 5-HTP on the days following XTC use, but not before or during. Are you taking antidepressants? In that case, we strongly advise against the use of 5-HTP.
Safer solutions than 5-HTP
If you want your body to recover as quickly as possible from substance use, 5-HTP might be a good addition, but nothing beats good sleep, some physical activity, and healthy nutrition. Try to avoid long, sleepless nights staring at the ceiling and aim to get 8-9 hours of sleep. Go for a gentle but long walk, and eat at regular times.
Nutrition
Regarding nutrition, several things are advisable. Consuming plenty of proteins, such as organic red meat or chicken, and complex carbohydrates can greatly help in replenishing substances like tryptophan. Foods rich in antioxidants are always beneficial; consider blueberries, almonds, raspberries, or broccoli. Omega-3 fatty acids from oily fish, along with their protein content, are certainly recommended if your stomach can handle them. Nourish your body well, both before and after the party. All the energy you've expended through endless dancing needs to be replenished! Your body must get its energy from somewhere.
Supplements after XTC use
Concerning supplements, several can promote a good night's sleep, including melatonin, valerian, lemon balm, and magnesium. If you need more energy but don't want to drink endless cups of coffee, you might opt for rhodiola rosea, a vitamin B complex, or acetylcarnitine. If you are looking for a natural way to feel calmer, consider magnesium, panax ginseng, or ashwagandha.
